EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

"I truly believe that every student is capable of learning any subject; it just sometimes takes several explanations for the information to “click." This is my expertise.

By knowing my subject matter well, and having the innate ability to quickly assess the needs of the students with whom I work, I am able to communicate the information in many ways because I have a true understanding of the content and how it can relate to other knowledge. Additionally, I have the unusual background of holding degrees in both the arts and sciences, and excelling in both arenas.

Once this access point of comprehension is found, I stimulate ownership of the material with reinforcement techniques and nurturing the students own connections with the material. This is what is often lost in the classroom – the ability to figure out the individuals students access point to comprehension, and locking it in.

boxAs a high school student, science always felt inaccessible to me. I struggled with learning a subject that seemed so intangible, and unfortunately, science is often taught that way. No wonder students have trouble connecting to the subject! I was fortunate to find my personal connection with science through psychology, and found each layer of the cognitive sciences more and more fascinating, right down to the microscopic and molecular level. Once I realized how science could relate to almost anything, including music and literature, I wanted to share this by developing curriculum to which students could easily relate.

In my ten years of experience teaching high school science, my students have not only consistently scored significantly higher on standardized exams, but they have left with an appreciation of the subject I taught and the confidence that they can succeed in any academic course. My philosophy is that any child can learn a subject; it’s finding the right way to approach the subject, which is a very individualized process. This is why private tutoring, especially in the sciences, can truly benefit your child.

Every student is unique. What’s almost impossible to grasp in a language of learning that’s foreign to a child, comes easy in a dialect that’s more natural to her or him. When we make the fundamentals of any subject a personal experience for a student, he or she looks forward to learning. Tutoring provides the one-on-one experience in which your child’s individual needs can be met." -- Michelle Wynn
